Caught In The Path
by Carolyn Glenn Brewer

cover.gif (47589 bytes)        Before Doppler Radar, before the Weather Channel, before storm sirens, a tornado dropped out of a troubled May sky and twisted its way into our lives forever. Caught In The Path tells this story. On the evening of May 20, 1957 a multiple vortex funnel hit the ground two miles southwest of Williamsburg, Kansas to write its signature through a seventy-one mile path of destruction. An hour and a half later this F-5 tornado left three Missouri communities south of Kansas City completely destroyed. Over a million dollars worth of property had turned to rubble and forty-four lives were lost. Caught In The Path traces the story from the early reported storms of that day through the summer of reconstruction. Nearly one hundred survivors tell, through oral histories, their stories of fear, courage, resiliency and humor. Woven throughout are period news accounts as well as the author's family's experiences of that night. This book shows not only the horror of loss, but how the human spirit transcends disaster.   This story is as current as yesterday's forecast, as timeless and childhood nightmares.
